Animated word-by-word captions, with no subscription
You know the effect: captions appear in short groups and the spoken word changes color, karaoke-style. Repères produces it in your browser from an automatic transcription of your video, with no app to install, no account and no subscription.
The tool runs in your browser; its interface is in English.
In short
Drop in the video, transcribe, pick one of the 3 animated styles and your color, then export in 1080×1920. Free with a small watermark; the Pro license (€19, paid once) removes it.
Step by step
- Open the tool on a computer, ideally in an up-to-date Chrome or Edge: they support WebGPU, which speeds up transcription.
- Drop in your video (MP4, MOV, WebM…). The file is read by your browser: it is not uploaded.
- Click "Transcribe". The Whisper speech recognition model detects every word and the moment it is spoken.
- Review. Every line is editable; when you fix a line, its start and end times are kept.
- Set the style: Highlight, Box or Word by word, active word color, 1 to 5 words per line, size, height, uppercase, and framing: "Fill" (crop to 9:16) or "Fit" (whole frame on a blurred background).
- Export with "Export 1080×1920 video". Export runs in real time (a 60 s video takes about 60 s): keep the tab visible meanwhile.
The three styles
- Highlight: the group of words is shown in white and the spoken word switches to your chosen color (yellow by default).
- Box: the spoken word sits on a rounded colored background (purple by default).
- Word by word: words appear one after another as they are spoken (cyan by default).
In all three, the text uses Montserrat in an extra-bold weight, with a black outline and a shadow so it stays readable on any image, and the active word briefly pops when it appears. This is the bold, punchy look often called "Hormozi-style" captions.
The settings
Active word color, words per line (1 to 5), size, height on screen, uppercase, and framing: "Fill" crops to 9:16, "Fit" keeps the whole frame on a blurred background. The preview updates instantly.
Karaoke subtitles outside the video
Need the effect in another program? The .ass export keeps word-level karaoke timing (\k tags) with your colors, size and position. It plays in VLC or Aegisub, and ffmpeg can burn it into a video.
What the tool does not do
Repères only does captions: no cutting, no music, no effects. If you already edit your video elsewhere, caption it at the end, or import the result into your editor (the WebM exported by Firefox imports into CapCut).
CapCut is a trademark of its owner. Repères is neither affiliated with nor endorsed by CapCut, nor by Alex Hormozi; these names are only used to describe the type of effect.
Limits, honestly
- A recent desktop browser is required. Tested on desktop Chrome and Edge (WebGPU). Firefox and Safari have not been fully tested yet; without WebGPU the tool falls back to WebAssembly, which is slower. On phones it may fail for lack of memory.
- First run. The model is a one-time download of ~90 MB (Fast) or ~250 MB (Accurate), then it is cached.
- Processing time depends on your hardware. WebGPU uses your graphics card; the WebAssembly fallback runs on the CPU and is noticeably slower. Video export runs in real time (a 60 s video takes about 60 s).
- The AI sometimes gets it wrong (names, numbers, acronyms). Review and fix the text before exporting.
- Output format. The video export is vertical 1080×1920: MP4 on recent Chrome/Edge and Safari, WebM on Firefox.
- Short videos. Built for short-form content (up to 3 to 5 minutes). Beyond that, the browser may run out of memory.
- Watermark on the free video export. Exported videos carry a small "Captioned with Repères" at the bottom right; the Pro license (€19, paid once) removes it. The .srt and .ass files never have a watermark.
FAQ
Is it really free?
Yes: transcription, 3 styles, 1080×1920 video export, .srt and .ass, with no usage limit. The only difference with Pro is the small "Captioned with Repères" watermark on the video.
Is Pro a subscription?
No. €19 paid once on Gumroad, which emails you a license key. You enter it in the tool.
Can I change the font?
No, the font is Montserrat extra-bold for all three styles. You can change the active word color, the size, the position and the casing.
Can I use the videos for a brand or a client?
Yes, the videos you make are yours.
